Bambenek Comments on Blagojevich Sentencing

From the campaign of John Bambenek for State Senate (52nd District)…

One Sad Chapter in Illinois History Closes, but Much More Remains to be Done to Fight Corruption

CHAMPAIGN, IL (December 7, 2011) — Republican candidate for Illinois State Senate in the 52nd district John Bambenek today issued a statement on the sentencing of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.

“Today ends a sad chapter in Illinois history with the sentencing of former Governor Rod Blagojevich to 14 years in federal prison. It sends a strong statement against political corruption but more remains to be done,” said Bambenek.

“Many people who bought favors from Rod are unpunished, and many still hold government jobs and appointments. The reforms enacted in the wake of the scandal are window dressing, including a governor recall provision that requires politicians to permit citizens to hold them accountable.
The hard work and political courage needed to bring about real reform is needed now more than ever to enact strong laws against public corruption, to allow state prosecutors the power to get wiretaps to investigate corruption, to enable citizens to hold their government accountable with greater transparency, and to get fundamental reform to make government on all levels leaner and accessible to all citizens.”

John Bambenek has been working to fight corruption and for reform of state government in Illinois for years, and is seeking to continue to be a force for change as he seeks the 52nd District State Senate seat.
