Illinois Looks at Rick Santorum

-By Warner Todd Huton

Seems like everyone had the 15 minutes to become the anti-Romney… well, everyone but Rick Santorum. But at the last minute that seems to be changing in Iowa. Santorum’s sudden surge has brought more interest to his campaign here in Illinois, too.

My interview with Santorum in Feb

Santorum has not had the biggest ground game thus far, it is true. Further, he’s staked a whole lot on Iowa. He’s spent much more time there than the other candidates, he’s done a ton of radio, TV, and newspapers interviews in the Hawkeye State and he’s put a lot of his cash on the line there, as well. And it looks like all that work is paying off.

A new CNN poll shows that Santorum has gained strength in Iowa to now taking up third place behind Paul and Romney. Showing Romney at 25%, Paul at 22% and Santorum at 16%, this result shows a surge for Santorum, a candidate that barely registered only a week ago.

It helps Santorum, of course, that the what was the top three (Romney, Gingrich, Paul) have spent the last week getting raked over the coals by an intense scrutiny that Santorum has not had to endure.

But, we should not simply blow off the importance of Santorum’s Iowa strategy. It has been a strategy of hard work, indeed. Santorum has gained at least six percentage points in only a week and that is quite a jump.

It isn’t just CNN saying Santorum is surging, either. Rasmussen also published results showing Santorum’s great improvement in the polls in the Hawkeye State. Razz shows the top three percentage as Romney at 23%, Paul with 22%, and Santorum at 16%. Razz also found that Santorum tops the list as “second choice.”

So, with all this new focus on Rick Santorum, this has given his supporters in other states some hope that their guy might at last be ready fro Prime Time. Illinois is no exception.

In Illinois we are seeing a renewed effort to push Santorum’s candidacy. A new blog was recently launched called Santorum Illinois where you can get up to the minute news on what Santorum’s Illinois team is up to.

The head of Team Santorum-Illinois is Jon Zahm. He passes on this op ed about Santorum’s Illinois campaign:

Greetings Fellow Santorum for President Supporter…

My name is Jon Zahm and I am the Political Director and Spokesman for our efforts in Illinois to get Senator Santorum on the ballot by the January 6 filing deadline. I have been a politcal activist at the grassroots since 1988 and currently am the Chairman of the Henry County Tea Party, the Illinois Gun Owner Rights Organization and serve as an elected Republican member of the Henry County Board and elected Republican Precinct Committeeman.. I am backing Rick Santorum because he is the most consistent and strong conservative, fiscally, socially, and on foreign policy. His record in Congress was that of a fighter for conservative principles. As a father of 7, and devoted husband, we know his heart and character is first class.

We have a great team in Illinois supporting Senator Santorum. Our Honorary Co-Chairs are Al and Kathy Salvi of Wauconda. They are longtime stalwart pro-life and pro-family champions, Al was our Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in 1996 and Secretary of State in 1998 and served as an elected State Representative with strong conservative values and results. Our Campaign Chairwoman is Penny Pullen of Arlington Heights. She served 16 years as an elected State Representative and is the founder of the Life Advocacy Resource Project. Penny is a conservative legend in Illinois. The Campaign Chairman is Devid Rickert, CPA, the Kane County Treasurer and Vice-Chairman of the Elgin Township Republican Organization. Elected first in 1998, he has been re-elected to serve the people of the 5th largest county in Illinois three times since.

We need your help to get Senator Santorum on the ballot in the final 10 days. First we need signatures of at least 3000 registered voters on the petition that bears his name. You can also get that petition at www.santorumillinois.wordpress.com, where I also have daily updates posted. This is a process that we will definitely succeed at because “many hands will make light work.” The harder part is that we need 600 signatures minimum on petitions in each Congressional District (there are 18) that have the name of specific individuals like you and me on them. People at the polls will vote for the delegate and alternate delegates of their choice whose name will be next to the Senator’s who will appear in parenthesis as such: (Santorum). Eac h district has 3 Delegates and 3 Alternates, except 15 & 18 which have 3 and 3 and 4 & 7 that have 2 and 2. All names eppear on each district sheet so one signature counts for all.

We have a few delegate and alternate postitions left. E-mail me right away at goliathslayers@gmail.com to let me know if you are interested. I will need your name, as you want it on the ballot, registered voting address, and a short biography/resume/backgrounder.

As I assemble each delegate petition I will post it in on the Santorum WordPress site.

We need help in circulating these petitions and then I need to collect them on January 5th for delivery to Springfield on the 6th. I will be at the Comfort Inn and Suites on the 5th and 6th putting the packets together for the State Board of Elections. 2620 S. Dirksen Parkway, Springfield, IL 62703 is the hotel address. I will set up in the breakfast room.

Senator Santorum is surging in the polls. It is very likely that he will emerge as the leading conservative candidate coming out of Iowa, the alternative to Mitt Romney and Ron Paul. So we have to be ready to win Illinois. The Santorum organization is very strong in South Carolina and is growing in New Hampshire and Florida. We can do this with your help.

E-mail me and I will send you the petitions you need. This weekend, at church, is crucial.

Thank you for reading this and God Bless You and Yours during this holy time of the year.

In Service,
Jon A. Zahm
