Bambenek Stands Up for the Rights of Voters
CHAMPAIGN, IL (March 12, 2012) — Republican State Senate Candidate for the 52nd District John Bambenek today voiced support for A Voice For Schools.com, and the effort to get a referendum on the ballot regarding the attempt to increase property taxes without voter consent by the Champaign Unit 4 School Board.
A Voice for Schools.com currently is working to get a referendum on the ballot such that voters would be allowed to approve or disprove the raising of working cash by the school board. The board recently voted to raise $14.5 million in working cash by issuing bonds. In the process, the board will be raising property taxes without voter consent, despite the current economic malaise. This maneuver by the school board is allowed under HB 6401. This proposal allowed the use of working cash for any purpose by school boards, and had been passed in 2010. Bambenek fought against this law, which undermines the ability of citizens to have a voice in government by forcing them to use backdoor referenda, and allows for property tax increases without voter approval.
Bambenek proposes that the borrowing power of school boards should come with additional checks due to the long term impact that such raising of funds has on schools. The current plan by the Champaign Unit 4 School Board requires using 20- year bonds. This time frame is much longer than the term of current school board members, and will restrict the actions of future boards due to the size and time frame of the financial obligation.
“I will always stand with the voters in promoting their right to have a say in their government,” Bambenek commented.
Mr. Bambenek is available for interviews regarding the current law, how it was passed, and his support of the petition drive.
